
Google Pixel’s AI-Powered Photo Tools Ignite a Debate on Image Manipulation

Google’s most recent smartphone releases, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, stand out from the competition by employing AI to modify people’s expressions in photographs. This addresses the common issue of someone in a group photo looking away from the camera or not smiling. Google’s phones can now analyze your photo library and use machine learning to seamlessly blend past expressions from different images, ensuring everyone in the group is smiling. This innovative feature is dubbed “Best Take.”
Additionally, these devices allow users to erase, move, and resize unwanted elements within a photo, whether they be people or buildings. Google’s “Magic Editor” feature, based on deep learning, analyzes the surrounding pixels to intelligently fill in the gaps, leveraging knowledge derived from millions of other photos. Notably, these features can be applied not only to pictures taken on the device but also to any images in your Google Photos library using the Pixel 8 Pro.
However, these AI enhancements have sparked a debate about their ethical implications. Tech commentators and reviewers have used terms like “icky,” “creepy,” and “posing serious threats to people’s trust in online content” to describe Google’s new AI technology. Andrew Pearsall, a professional photographer and senior journalism lecturer at the University of South Wales, voiced concerns about the potential dangers of AI manipulation. He warned that even small aesthetic alterations could lead to a slippery slope, especially when used in professional contexts.

Isaac Reynolds, who leads the camera systems development team at Google, emphasized the company’s commitment to ethical considerations. He clarified that features like “Best Take” do not fabricate anything; rather, they present an idealized representation of a moment captured from multiple real moments.
Professor Rafal Mantiuk, an expert in graphics and displays at the University of Cambridge, emphasized that smartphone AI is not meant to replicate reality but to produce visually pleasing images. The inherent limitations of smartphones necessitate the use of machine learning to enhance photos, such as adding elements that were never there or replacing a frown with a smile.
